Traveling with the Art of Frieze New York ARCO Madrid and TEFAF Maastricht 2021
Post By Joe Leonard
With the COVID vaccine rollout and restrictions beginning to ease up, art fairs and festivals are slowly but surely returning with both in-person events and online alternatives. From the upcoming Frieze New York to this fall’s TEFAF Maastricht, Getafiesta has the low-down on how to make the most of your art fair experience. Whether you’re willing and able to travel or you’re looking for a virtual experience, we can show you how to fuel your love for art.
Frieze New York
Frieze New York is the first major art fair on the horizon, with this year’s event taking place May 5-9 at The Shed in Manhattan. This year’s fair brings together over 60 galleries from all around the world, including both renowned artists such as David Zwirner and François Ghebaly as well as newer artists like Henrique Pavão and Karon Davis.
You must have a letter of proof of either a negative COVID test up to 72 hours before your visit or proof of full vaccination in order to attend the in-person event. While early bird tickets have already sold out, you can secure your place at the fair by purchasing second release tickets now.
If you’ve got money to spend and you’re looking for the ultimate experience, however, then you can get special access to the fair by becoming a Frieze member. By joining Frieze 91, you and a guest will get private access to all Frieze art fairs and receive invitations to exclusive VIP events where you can rub elbows with international artists and collectors.
Art-lovers who are unable to travel to New York for the fair need not fret, however. The Frieze Viewing Room will run parallel to the fair from May 5-14. This expanded digital program allows you to view many of the works on display as well as connect with other artists and art-lovers from all over the globe.
ARCOmadrid
If you’re in Europe and you’re looking for an art fair a little closer to home, ARCOmadrid is celebrating its 40th anniversary with this year’s fair. Taking place from July 7-11, ARCOmadrid will have a selection specially dedicated to galleries such as María Inés Rodríguez and Sergio Rubira that have participated in the fair over its 40-year run.
ARCOmadrid will include ArtsLibris, a book fair and platform that disseminates artist’s books and features several presentations about the future of art publishing. The art fair also includes an ARCOmadrid Forum where artists and visitors can participate in spirited debates about contemporary art. While tickets have not yet become available to ARCOMadrid, you can follow Getafiesta on Instagram or subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to hear any updates.
TEFAF Maastricht
Another European art fair on the horizon is TEFAF Maastricht in the Netherlands, which features over 275 dealers of fine art, antiques, and design. TEFAF showcases traditional works such as Old Master paintings alongside modern and contemporary art, photography, and jewelry. This year’s fair runs from September 11-19, with an Early Access Day on September 9th and a Preview Day on September 10th.
