Getafiesta Helps You Get to Black Rock City This Year and Burn the Man!
Try as you might, it’s almost impossible to classify exactly what Burning Man is. Part city building, art exhibition, social experiment, and zany, creative free for all, Burning Man is an event everyone should experience at least once in their life.
Imagine tens of thousands of people descending each year on Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to build Black Rock City. It’s a pop-up metropolis filled with otherworldly architecture, transcendent machines, fantastical performance art, and some of the most interesting people you never expected to meet. If that wasn’t enough, the nine-day event culminates with a giant bonfire — a massive wooden man set ablaze for the edification of all.
Will the man burn this year? It’s still too early to tell. The pandemic put the kibosh on Black Rock City in 2020. While the event’s organizers are eager to get back to the desert this year, they’re exercising caution and can’t yet promise that the event will occur. If it does, they’ll take all appropriate COVID precautions.
Venture Into the Great Unknown
This year’s theme is all about emerging from the isolation of the pandemic, reconnecting with the wonderful mutants we all are, and reimagining our place in a world forever changed.
If the event doesn’t go virtual as it did last year, your chance to join the joyful madness extends from August 29 through September 6. However, ticketing is...complicated.
Because it’s unclear when participants will return to the desert, you can’t buy tickets. Instead, hopeful attendees can purchase a reservation for $2,500 that affords them the right to purchase tickets to the next two Burning Man events at the normal market price. It’s a steep fee to be sure, but if you’ve ever spent nine days in Black Rock City, you know that it’s worth every penny.
“I Have My Ticket. What Else Do I Need?”
In short, everything. Organizers call the event an exercise in radical self-sufficiency, so don’t show up thinking you can purchase food or a place to sleep. You’re required to bring everything you need to survive in a desert landscape — food, water, and shelter.
Beyond that, bring whatever you can to fully participate in the Burning Man experience — instruments, art supplies, costumes, giant metal marmot sculptures that crawl the desert collecting trash — those sorts of things. Burning Man is created by those who attend, so the more you participate, the better!
